SQL has been an official standard, promulgated by the International Institute of Standardization (ISO) and its American Affiliate, the American National Standard Institute (ANSI) since 1986.

There were lot of version of SQL introduced like SQL86, SQL89, SQL92 and SQL99.

Following are standard sub-components of SQL99.

    SQL Framework

    Provides logical concept

    SQL Foundation

Builds on the material in Framework and specifies, for the more fundamental parts of the standard, the actual nuts and bolts of the language.

    SQL/CLI (Call-level interface)

Specifies a standard API (Application Programming Interface) through which
    SQL operations can be called.

    SQL/PSM (Persistent Stored Modules)

Refers to procedural extensions to SQL that make it computationally complete and therefore suitable for the development of full applications.

    SQL/Bindings

Specifies how SQL is to be bound to variable host languages, excluding Java.

    SQL/MM (Multimedia)

This extends SQL to deal intelligently with large, complex and sometimes streaming items of data, such as video, audio and spatial data.

    SQL/OLB (Object Languege Bindings)

Part 0 (as they call it) of the SQLJ specification for embedding SQL in Java.

In short SQL was developed by IBM in 1970. First commercial used by Oracle. And day by day all DBMS and RDBMS are following to use this language for Backend interaction.
